Effect of injected rotenone on the production and composition of urine from the rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri)
Renal function was evaluated in adult rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) dosed i.a. with rotenone at 225 and 275 μg/kg. The chemical composition of urine samples and urine flow rates collected over a 5-h pretreatment period were compared with hourly urine samples collected over a 5-h posttreatment period. Significant increases in osmolality and in concentrations of sodium, potassium, chloride, glucos

Liquid chromatography of hydrocarbonaeous quaternary amines on cyclodextrin bonded silica
Mixtures of n-alkylbenzyldimethylammonium chloride (ABDAC) were resolved into homologous components by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a cyclodextrin-bonded silica stationary phase. With a few exceptions, results from this study are similar to those obtained from traditional reversed-phase HPLC. It was found that the presence of electrolytes in aqueous mobile phases is not a cri

Energy budget and prey requirements of breeding lapland longspurs Calcarius lapponicus near Barrow Alaska, U.S.A.
Breeding Lapland longspurs, Calcarius lapponicus, near Barrow, Alaska, have relatively constant energy demands throughout the summer; the average estimated daily energy budgets (DEBs) were 132 and 118 kJ for the male and female. Thermoregulation accounted consistently for one-quarter to one-third of the total DEB. Flight in the male and incubation in the female were major components of the DEB ear

Persistence of rotenone in ponds at different temperatures
Two ponds were treated with liquid rotenone (5% rotenone), one with 3 mg/L at 24°C and the other with 2 mg/L at 0°C (concentrations of active rotenone were 0.15 and 0.10 mg/L, respectively). Water samples were collected and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The concentration of rotenone declined to 0.02 mg/L in 48 h in warm water and in 11 d in cold water. The half-life of roteno

Direct conversion of terpenylalkanolamines to ethylidyne N-nitroso compounds
A series of mono- and diterpenylalkanolamines bearing isopropylidene functionality on the terpene group was reacted with sodium nitrite in aqueous acetic acid to yield ethylidyne N-nitroso analogues. The key feature of this direct conversion involved initial N-nitrosation followed by apparent elimination of a "CH4" unit (not necessarily methane) from the isopropylidene double bond. The product dis

Reproductive success and heavy metal contamination in Rhode Island common terns
Common tern cIutch size, reproductive success and growth of young recorded from an abandoned barge on the Providence River, an area of heavy metal contamination, were equal to, or greater than, .from less contaminated areas. Concentrations of copper and zinc were higher in livers of nestling terns from the Providence River than from other, less contaminated, areas. However, concentrations of magne

Hydrogeologic framework and properties of regional aquifers in the Hollandale Embayment, southeastern Minnesota
In 1977, the U.S. Geological Survey began a series of investigations of regional aquifer systems in the United States. These studies will provide quantitative information for use in developing and managing regional ground-water supplies. One of these studies, the Northern Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) project, concerns the Cambrian and Ordovician age aquifers that occur in southe

Climatic data for Williams Lake, Hubbard County, Minnesota, 1984
Research on the hydrology of Williams Lake, north-central Minnesota includes study of evaporation. Presented here are those climatic data needed for energy-budget and mass-transfer studies, including: water-surface temperature, dry-bulb and wet-bulb air temperatures, wind speed, precipitation, and solar and atmospheric radiation. Data are collected at raft and land stations.

USGS research on energy resources, 1986; program and abstracts
The extended abstracts in this volume are summaries of the papers presented orally and as posters in the second V. E. McKelvey Forum on Mineral and Energy Resources, entitled "USGS Research on Energy Resources-1986." The Forum has been established to improve communication between the USGS and the earth science community by presenting the results of current USGS research on nonrenewable resources i
Finite-difference grid for a doublet well in an anisotropic aquifer
The U.S. Geological Survey is modeling hydraulic flow and thermal-energy transport at a two-well injection/ withdrawal system in St. Paul, Minnesota. The design of the finite-difference model grid for the doublet-well system is complicated because the aquifer is anisotropic and the principal axes of transmissivity are not aligned with the axis between the two wells.

Distribution of early life history stages of fishes in selected pools of the upper Mississippi River
Effective management of the fishery resources of the Upper Mississippi River and successful mitigation of the loss of critical habitat depend in part on an understanding of the reproductive and early life history requirements of the affected fishes. However, little is known about the use of nursery areas by fishes in the river. Of the nearly 130 species identified in the adult ichthyofauna, only a
