Piscivory by Lake Superior lake herring (Coregonis artedi) on Rainbow smelt (Osmerus moradax) in winter, 1993-1995
The stomach contents of 31 lake herring (Coregonus artedi), captured by anglers from western Lake Superior in the winters of 1993–1995, were examined to determine if predation on rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) was occurring as indicated by anglers. Twenty-six (84%) of the stomachs contained rainbow smelt, with an average of 7.0 rainbow smelt/stomach. This was the first documentation of piscivory b

Fractal structure of sequential behaviour patterns: an indicator of stress
The detection of stress arising from parasitic infection bySarcoptes scabieisand from pregnancy is explored, using a fractal analysis of head lifting behaviour and feeding–non-feeding activity sequences in female Spanish ibex,Capra pyrenaica, under natural conditions. Because organisms under stress increase their metabolic rate and, in consequence, energy consumption, it follows that stress will,

Performance of antimycin in high-gradient streams
A variety of low- to high-gradient streams in Colorado and Montana were treated with the fish toxicant antimycin (Fintrol) to evaluate its efficacy in relation to stream gradient. In general, a dose of 8 μg/L delivered for 8 h effectively killed brook trout Salvelinus fontinalisand rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss over an elevation drop of 60–75 m where pH was low (≤7.0) and water temperature was

Physiology of fish in intensive culture systems
Fish culture in hatcheries and other aquacultural facilities is becoming much more intensive all over the world. The success of all kinds of fish rearing depends on the quality of management and this depends, in turn, on understanding the biology of fishes and the aquatic environment in which they live. This book directly addresses the relationship between the aquatic environment and the fishes. A

Criteria for reducing predation by northern squawfish near juvenile salmonid bypass outfalls at Columbia River dams
Predation by northern squawfish (Ptychocheilus oregonensis) has been documented to be significant on emigrating juvenile salmonids near juvenile bypass outfalls at hydroelectric dams on the Columbia River. Criteria for siting juvenile fish bypass outfalls to reduce predation were developed using locational data from radio-tagged northern squawfish in The Dalles Dam trailrace, Columbia River. Radio
