The Reston Stable Isotope Laboratory (RSIL) provides the following:

  • hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and sulfur forensic-quality, stable isotope-ratio analyses of water, rock, and biological samples for environmental studies 
  • noble gas analyses of water for groundwater and surface-water studies 
  • tritium analyses of water for groundwater dating 
  • hydrogen-, carbon-, nitrogen-, oxygen-, and sulfur-bearing isotopic reference materials for calibration of mass spectrometers and laser absorption spectrometers 

Our customers include the U.S. Geological Survey, other Bureaus of the Department of the Interior, other federal agencies, state agencies, county agencies, private organizations, and organizations outside the United States.

The RSIL is located in the John Powell National Center of the U.S. Geological Survey.
