Development of characterization technology for fault zone hydrology

Several deep trenches were cut, and a number of geophysical surveys were conducted across the Wildcat Fault in the hills east of Berkeley, California. The Wildcat Fault is believed to be a strike-slip fault and a member of the Hayward Fault System, with over 10 km of displacement. So far, three boreholes of ∼ 150m deep have been core-drilled and borehole geophysical logs were conducted. The rocks

Using selective drainage methods to hydrologically-condition and hydrologically-enforce lidar-derived surface flow

The methods to extract surface flow from coarse elevation data are well documented; however, the methods to extract surface flow from high-resolution, high-vertical accuracy digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from light detection and ranging (lidar) are less documented, but yet more complex. As lidar data are increasingly used to generate DEMS, the demand for lidar-derived surface flow escala

A method for land surveying sampling optimization strategy

At present, how to select a limited but representative sample dataset from the existing land information database to guide the new round of land survey and assessment sampling is a critical issue for land sampling strategy study. As a case study to determine and analyze the sample capacity and sample spatial location of land survey sampling for the study area, Panyu District in Guangzhou, the pape

Management of surface water and groundwater withdrawals to maintain environmental stream flows in Michigan

In 2008, the State of Michigan enacted legislation requiring that new or increased high-capacity withdrawals (greater than 100,000 gallons per day) from either surface water or groundwater be reviewed to prevent Adverse Resource Impacts (ARI). Science- based guidance was sought in defining how groundwater or surface-water withdrawals affect streamflow and in quantifying the relation between reduce

Trace-metal concentrations in African dust: Effects of long-distance transport and implications for human health

The Sahara and Sahel lose billions of tons of eroded mineral soils annually to the Americas and Caribbean, Europe and Asia via atmospheric transport. African dust was collected from a dust source region (Mali, West Africa) and from downwind sites in the Caribbean [Trinidad-Tobago (TT) and U.S. Virgin Islands (VI)] and analysed for 32 trace-elements. Elemental composition of African dust samples wa
