Defining the temporal and geographic limits for an urban mapping study

Urban mapping research has demonstrated that historic maps can be integrated with remotely sensed data and related geographic information to successfully detect changing urban land characteristics for large metropolitan areas. Effective and efficient temporal mapping requires that procedures be defined for selecting the temporal range and geographic extent of a study area. Procedures were develope

Radar reflectivities of plausible Titan surfaces

We consider plausible reflectivity ranges for candidate Titan surfaces, with application to radar altimeter investigations on both the Cassini Orbiter and Huygens Probe. The appropriate measure of surface scattering is the specific backscatter cross-section at normal incidence or, for smooth surfaces, the specific backscatter averaged over the sensitivity of the altimeter beam pattern. A clean eth

Natural attenuation of chlorinated hydrocarbons in a freshwater wetland

Natural attenuation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOC's) occurs as ground water discharges from a sand aquifer to a freshwater wetland at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. Field and laboratory results indicate that biotransformation in the anaerobic wetland sediments is an important attenuation process. Relatively high concentrations of the parent compounds trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,

Community involvement in a multimedia outreach project for Caddo Lake, Texas

Caddo Lake is located in northeast Texas and northwest Louisiana and is the largest freshwater lake in Texas. A portion of the lake in Texas has been designated a "Wetland of International Significance" under the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. The human community in the watershed has experienced a number of hydrological alterations to Caddo Lake over the last 100 years by the Federal Gov

Evaluation of streamwater quality in the Atlanta region

A water-quality index (WQI) was developed from historical data for streams in the Atlanta region. The WQI was derived from percentile ranks of individual water-quality parameter values at each stream by normalizing the constituent ranks for values from all sites in the area for the period from 1990 to 1995. WQIs were developed primarily for nutrients and nutrient-related parameters, because
