National Volcano Early Warning System Advisory Committee (NVEWSAC)
The National Volcano Early Warning System Advisory Committee (NVEWSAC) was created in 2019 by legislation authorizing the National Volcano Early Warning System (NVEWS).
The NVEWS Advisory Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary of the Interior through the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey on implementing the National Volcano Early Warning System. The NVEWSAC provides an annual report to the Secretary that describes its activities. Committee members represent their respective institutions and act as subject matter experts to enhance efficiencies in data gathering pertinent to NVEWSAC decisions and recommendations. The Committee’s membership and procedures comply with the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA).
NVEWSAC annual reports and meetings are announced on this website and also published in the Federal Register in compliance with the notification requirement of section 10(a)(2) of the FACA.

NVEWSAC Meetings
September 18-19, 2024
The National Volcano Early Warning System Advisory Committee's inaugural public meeting was held on Wednesday, September 18, and Thursday, September 19, 2024, near the Cascades Volcano Observatory in Vancouver, Washington. The meeting was introductory in nature, and topics included: Introductions to the USGS, Volcano Hazards Program, Volcano Science Center, and NVEWS; members' work priorities and its alignment to USGS priorities; and standardizing the NVEWSAC business practices.
