Prolonged retention of methyl mercury by mallard drakes
Mallard drakes accumulated mercury rapidly from dietary dosage of methylmercury dicyandiamide and eliminated it slowly, retaining approximately one half at the end of 84 days; no measurable loss occurred between the end of the 7th and 56th days, but loss resumed concurrently with new feather growth, and continued through the 112th day, the close of the study.

Residues of environmental pollutants and shell thinning in merganser eggs
Clutches of merganser eggs were collected in 1973 and 1975 to determine whether levels of organochlorines and mercury might be responsible for possible population declines and to compare eggshell measurements with those of early museum collections. One egg per clutch was selected randomly for chemical analysis. Overall, residues of DDE, PCB?s, and mercury were low in Hooded Merganser eggs; localit

Waterfowl exposure to lead and steel shot on selected hunting areas
Gizzards and wingbones from immature mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), pintails (Anas acuta), black ducks (A. rubripes), and Canada geese (Branta canadensis) were collected from 12 national and stat hunting are.as during the hunting season of 1974-75. The gizzards were examined for the occurrence of lead and steel shot and the wingbones were analyzed for lead residues. Incidence of lead shot in gi

Brain cholinesterase activities of birds from forests sprayed with trichlorfon (Dylox) and carbaryl (Sevin-4-oil)
Brain cholinesterase activities were determined in birds from forests sprayed with Dylox2 at 1.13 kg/hectare (1 1b/acre — active ingredient [a.i.]) or Sevin-4-oil2 at 1.13 kg/hectare (1 1b/acre — a.i.) for up to 5 days postspray. Of ten bird species evaluated from the Dylox spray area, four species represented by six individuals had values which were depressed more than 2 standard deviations below

Studies on the protein and sulfur amino acid requirements of young bobwhite quail
Four experiments were conducted with purified diets to examine the influence of protein level and to estimate the sulfur amino acid (S.A.A.) requirement of young Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus). These studies demonstrated (I) that 26% protein was sufficient for rapid growth when the diet was supplemented with methionine; (2) that diets containing higher levels of protein (29.3% and 31.3%) fa
