Clutch size of the clapper rail

Incidental information concerning the clutch size of the Clapper Rail (Rallus longirostris) was obtained during other studies of this species in the extensive salt marshes near Chincoteague, Virginia. Clutches were considered complete when repeated visits to the nest showed no additional eggs or when embryonic development could be clearly detected.

Peromyscus ranges at high and low population densities

Live-trapping studies at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Maryland, showed that the ranges of wood mice were larger when the population density was lower and smaller when the population density was higher. When the population density was about 1.3 male mice per acre in June 1954, the average distance recorded between traps after four or more captures was 258 feet. When the population density

Pesticidal residues in animal tissues

Tests with penned starlings, rats, pheasants, and ducks indicated that each species differs in sensitivity to the various pesticides. Residues in tissues are proportional to the degree of exposure during area treatment and they are also found in animals shot six or more months after treatment. The presence of more than 20-30 ppm of DDT, 20 ppm of chlordan, and 6-20 ppm of heptachlor epoxide in qua

Problems associated with practices that increase the reported recoveries of waterfowl bands

The reliability of information based upon banded birds bagged which are reported depends upon the extent to which the following conditions are met: ....1. The reported ratio is the same between years with the same areas of interest....2. The reported ratio is essentially the same between different areas of interest....3. The reported ratio is known for each area of interest....If the first two con

Mallard age and sex determination from wings

This paper describes characters on the wing plumage of the mallard that indicate age and sex. A key outlines a logical order in which to check age and sex characters on wings. This method was tested and found to be more than 95 percent reliable, although it was found that considerable practice and training with known-age specimens was required to achieve this level of accuracy....The implications
