Earth MRI
The infrastructure law invests $320 million in the USGS Earth Mapping Resource Initiative (Earth MRI), a partnership of the USGS, the Association of American State Geologists and other governmental, Tribal and private-sector entities to update the nation’s surface and subsurface mapping. The new funding will yield a better understanding of sustainable mineral production and mine waste options.

On November 15, 2021, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, making a once-in-a-generation investment in the Nation’s infrastructure and economic competitiveness. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is advancing scientific innovation through a $510.7 million investment in the USGS, with a significant portion going to fund critical minerals research.
