The upcoming Landsat Next mission and emerging applications of Landsat will take center stage at the weeklong American Geophysical Union (AGU) Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., on Monday December 9, 2024.

In addition to these specific topics, Landsat is mentioned over 500 times in various posters and presentations during the week. Visit the AGU link at the bottom of this article to learn more!

Landsat Next will collect Earth imagery with 26-band "super spectral" sensors on a three-satellite constellation.

The mission is designed to tackle evolving scientific and environmental challenges, including monitoring freshwater quality, assessing crop development and health, analyzing the impacts of urban heat islands, and tracking dynamics of snow and ice.

The following AGU24 presentations will provide insight into the upcoming Landsat Next mission:

Landsat’s 50+ year archive is an unparalleled resource for the advancement of Earth science and land change/land use studies.

Using the Landsat archive, highly complex science products with detailed information about the Earth’s surface have been developed, enabling researchers worldwide to address critical issues such as deforestation in the Amazon; urban expansion in rapidly growing cities like Phoenix, Arizona; agricultural water use in California's Central Valley; and mitigating the effects of urban heat islands in cities like Atlanta, Georgia.
