Latest in Landsat - February 2024 - Vol. 3 | Issue 2
2024 started out busy in the world of Landsat! Check out the items below to learn more about suspended Landsat 7 data acquisitions, and why a number of Landsat 8 Level-1 scenes were reprocessed to apply a corrected Calibration Parameter File. Also, don't miss a new Image of the Week, and some great Eyes on Earth episodes that talk how Landsat is being used in for science research!
Landsat 7 Imaging Suspended
On Friday, January 19, 2024 (DOY 019) at 02:41:50Z, Landsat 7 imaging was suspended due to the satellite’s transition into full sunlight, which caused issues with the batteries. Imaging was suspended to retain the health and safety of the batteries. The satellite will remain in full sunlight until mid-April 2024.
Instagram Live - DOI Secretary Haaland and USGS Director Applegate
An Instagram Live even hosted by Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland with special guest USGS Director Dr. David Applegate. The even took place on January 5, 2024.
Reprocessing of Landsat 8 Data Acquired January 1-6, 2024
Landsat 8 products generated from data acquired January 1, 2024, to January 6, 2024, are being reprocessed to correct an issue within the radiometric parameters that were applied during a recent Landsat 8 Calibration Parameter File (CPF) update.
Changes to Landsat Surface Temperature Atmospheric Auxiliary Data
Landsat Collection 2 Level-2 surface temperature products are derived using a single channel algorithm which requires near contemporaneous auxiliary atmospheric characterization data. As of January 1, 2024, a new source of auxiliary data is being used for Landsat surface temperature product processing.
Image of the Week: Landsat Views of Africa's Largest Hydro Dam
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is set to become the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.Located near the Sudan border in Ethiopia, the promising and controversial project impacts communities up and down the Blue Nile.Landsat sensors capture the region in false color infrared, emphasizing the reservoir's boundary. In 2023, the fourth and final phase of reservoir filling was completed,…
Landsat Calibration & Validation
While Landsat satellites are well-designed and calibrated prior to launch, continuous calibration is required to offset degradation that may be caused by mechanical or electrical effects, or exposure to UV radiation. Calibration requires a comparison between the measuring instrument and an absolute reference standard of known accuracy. Validation of Landsat data is an ongoing effort.
Landsat Commercial Cloud Data Access
Landsat Collection 2 data can be accessed from the Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud platform. Leveraging the data storage and processing capabilities that cloud services provide offers new ways to explore the growing record of Landsat observations.
Eyes on Earth
Eyes on Earth is a podcast on remote sensing, Earth observation, land change and science, brought to you by the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center.
Landsat 7 Image of the Southern Fringe of the Rub' al-Khali Sand Desert in Oman
Landsat 7 Image of the Southern Fringe of the Rub' al-Khali Sand Desert near Al-Hashman, Oman. This gap-filled image was captured on January 18, 2024 and is shown using the shortwave infrared, near infrared and red bands (Bands 5|4|3).To learn more about the Landsat Program visit www.usgs.gov/landsat
