The background shading indicates seismic hazard as defined in the USGS National Seismic Hazard Model. Regions with lighter highlighting have comparatively higher seismic hazard. Today, ANSS national and regional seismic networks operate over 3,000 seismic stations, including those that power the west coast ShakeAlert® earthquake early warning system.
