Bird Survey Map Matthew Island, Alaska

This map shows all available marine bird survey data from the North Pacific Pelagic Seabird Database (NPPSD) around St. Matthew Island, Alaska (northern Bering Sea) during the months of June, July, and August.  The data comprise over 10,000 observations of 42 marine bird species and 10 marine mammal species during surveys conducted between 1975 and 2021.  These data were used to inform a possible oil spill response relating to a stranded vessel off the coast of St. Matthew in July of 2024. These data were extracted by drawing a polygon around St. Matthew Island using the NPPSD Visualization Tool, which is a R Shiny application developed by the USGS to facilitate viewing and filtering the NPPSD using an interactive leaflet map.
