Carmel River by Sleepy Hollow reach
Detailed Description
Photograph of Carmel River near the Sleepy Hollow reach. San Clemente Dam was built on Carmel River in 1921 to supply water locally. After being declared seismically unfit, plans to remove the dam began. It was completely removed in 2015. Removing the dam also enabled the restoration of steelhead spawning and rearing habitat, and by 2019 over 100 steelhead were counted 5 miles upstream of the former dam.
