Detailed Description
Abandoned mine working and tailing piles at the Nikitovka mines, Gorlovka, Ukraine. For more than 50 years, the largest mercury production facility of the former Soviet Union operated in Horlivka (Gorlovka, Russian spelling), a city of approximately 300,000 residents in the Donets Basin. During this period about 30,000 metric tons of mercury was produced from the ore taken from the adjacent Mykytivka (Nikitovka) mines.
