Crater Lake, Oregon - 4 Topo comparison maps

The image is a composite of four screenshots comparing four USGS topographic maps. The large screenshot at the top half of the image is an area around Crater Lake, Oregon, with a 1:100K US Topo sample at full resolution.

A solid-line red box focuses on Wizard Island and the surrounding area, half water and half inland and shoreline. The area shown is the reference for the bottom three screenshots which are used to compare design and resolution of the different Topographic map products.

Screenshots in the bottom of the overall image are, from left to right:

1. 1:100K historical topographic map (30x60 minute map series)
   • The 1989 image has flat features with topographic altitude lines, feature labels, and superimposed red dashed lines indicating their corresponding topographic quadrant map. Colors imply geographic features such as shades of green to white for land, solid light blue for large bodies of water, and solid blue lines for streams.
      
2. 1:24K (7.5-Minute) US Topo
   • The 2021 image uses multiple topographic altitude lines which makes flat features appear more 3 dimensional. Features are labeled and superimposed solid orange lines indicate the corresponding latitude and longitude lines. Colors imply geographic features such as shades of green to white for land and two shades of blue for water.
      
3. 1:24K (7.5-Minute) OnDemand Topo (photo-reduced)
   • The undated image uses topographic altitude lines and shadowing which makes flat features appear somewhat 3 dimensional. Features are labeled and superimposed orange hatch lines indicate the corresponding latitude and longitude lines. Colors imply geographic features such as shades of green to white for land, blue for water and blue dashed lines for additional water features.

• The 2022 map screenshot uses topographic altitude lines and various degrees of shadowing which makes flat features appear 3 dimensional. Features are labeled and superimposed solid orange lines indicate the corresponding latitude and longitude lines. Colors imply geographic features such as shades of green to light yellow for land, light blue for the lake, and solid blue lines for additional lake water features. Inland water features are labeled and indicated by blue dotted and dashed lines.
