Flume experiments help to understand mechanics of flows.

Detailed Description

To better understand the physics of debris flows and to make more accurate hazards forecasts in the natural environment, scientists perform controlled experiments at the large-scale USGS debris flow flume facility. The 100 m (330 ft) long flume is used to develop and test physical models of debris flows and to develop improved technologies for mitigating the destructive effects of debris flows.
