Detailed Description
Landsat 8 nighttime thermal infrared image of Yellowstone National Park from January 31, 2023. Satellite-based thermal infrared data show areas on the surface that are warmer versus cooler, and they can be used to estimate surface temperature and the geothermal radiative heat output from the Yellowstone magmatic and hydrothermal system. The warmest areas (lightest in shade) in this image are as much as 46 °C (83 °F) above background. Geologic structures are indicated in red (solid line is caldera boundary, and dashed lines mark resurgent domes); thermal areas are labeled in yellow.
