Landsat Collection 2 Generation Timeline

Detailed Description

This graphic displays the timeline of generating Landsat Collection 2 Level-1 and Level-2 scene-based products.

Landsat Level-1 products

  • Landsat 9 Level-1 Tier 1 or Tier 2 products become available 4-6 hours of acquisition.
  • Landsat 8 Level-1 products are initially processed and made available in 4 to 6 hours as Real-Time (RT) products.
    • Refined Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) instrument line of sight model parameters are required to generate a Landsat 8 tiered product - this can take up to 10 days.

Landsat Level-2 products

Landsat Level-2 product processing requires the application of atmospheric auxiliary data from multiple external sources. These data typically become available 2 days after the Landsat data is acquired. Landsat Level-2 products become available about 24 hours after the atmospheric auxiliary data are applied to the Level-1 data.

The total time from data acquisition to Level-2 product generation:

  • Landsat 9: 3 days
  • Landsat 8: 4 to 11 days

Additional products generated after Level-2

Landsat U.S. Analysis Ready Data (ARD) tile-based products are generated 2 to 3 days after Level-2 science products are generated. From U.S. ARD, operational Landsat Level-3 Science Products are generated.
