Cliffs of Kaibab Limestone along the South Kaibab Trail. Cliffs and slopes along the upper canyon of the South Rim (shown here in the distance) include the sedimentary rock formations, top to bottom, Kaibab Limestone (white ledges below rim), Toroweap Formation (forested slope), Coconino Sandstone (massive gray cliff), Hermit Shale (slope just below Coconino Sandstone), Supai Group (alternating, red, sandstone ledges and and shale slopes), and Redwall Limestone (massive cliff partly visible in lower right) (Beus, 1987).
