Detailed Description

The Railroad Valley Playa, located in east central Nevada, measures about 80 miles long and nearly 20 miles wide, and is a vast and wide-open landscape. 

A portion of the playa is used as a vicarious radiometric calibration and validation site for various satellite sensors. This site was designated as Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) LANDNET site.  (Visit the USGS Test Sites Catalog to learn more about how Railroad Valley is used.) 

This image of the area was acquired June 29, 2024 by Landsat 9's Operational Land Imager (OLI). Path 40, Row 33. Bands 6,5,4.
