Road sign on Highway 11 warning drivers of high sulfur dioxide gas concentrations in the area from Kīlauea volcano. The temporary sign was put in place by Hawai‘i County Civil Defense, the agency responsible for public safety. The effects of the increased sulfur dioxide emission rate from the Halema‘uma‘u vent were widespread in downwind communities, with reports of temporarily high concentrations as high as 9 parts per million.
