Tarrabool Lake, Northern Territory

Detailed Description

Tarrabool Lake is a seasonal lake in Australia’s Northern Territory. While the lake’s water level fluctuates from year to year, its swampy wetlands and the surrounding tropical forested areas supports an essential habitat for small mammals, reptiles, and a wide variety of bird species.

This image, acquired on August 27, 2024 by Landsat 8's Operational Land Imager (OLI), displays the northeastern portion of Tarrabool. The Creswell Creek, flowing down from the right corner of the image, is the largest source of water for the lake.

The OLI’s spectral bands return information about the Earth’s surface in wavelengths that allows us to see details near the shoreline and in the water that may impact the many species that are supported by Tarrabool.

The 50+ year archive of Landsat data can be used to continuously study landmasses, shorelines, and lakes around the globe - throughout a season, a year, or through decades.
