Detailed Description

Thumbnail image for an animation of earthquake production during the 2018 eruption and caldera collapse of Kīlauea volcano. Inset of the Hawaiian Islands shows the location of the main frame (red polygon). The main animation frame shows earthquakes detected by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, from 2018-April-30 00:00 to August-07 00:00 UTC, shown as red circles and sized according to magnitude—the largest of which is the M6.9 earthquake, on May-04 22:32 UTC (12:32 HST). Earthquake histogram, counts, and rate are shown on the bottom panel. The sound is sonified from seismic data recorded by two stations HV.RIMD and HV.KLUD and HV.RIMD to capture seismicity produced at Kilauea summit and the Lower East Rift Zone, respectively.
