Tongariro National Park’s Volcanic Massif

Detailed Description
This Landsat 8 image displays the massif of the three active volcanoes that dominate Tongariro National Park, on New Zealand’s North Island.
Mount Ruapehu is the large mountain visible in this image. Reaching over 9,000 feet, it is the highest point on the North Island. Moving north from Ruapehu, the Upper and Lower Tama Lakes are shadowed by Mount Ngauruhoe at 7,500 feet.
Mount Tongariro (at nearly 6,000 feet) is the northernmost of the three volcanoes landscape, sitting very close to Ngauruhoe. The small circular feature north of Tongariro is Blue Lake.
The Tongariro National Park, designated as a World Heritage Site in 1993, supports a diverse range of ecosystems, flora, and fauna.
