Project Highlights - Fall 2023

National Digital Trails (NDT) project highlights

Hello! Welcome to the National Digital Trails Fall 2023 Newsletter.

We hope everyone enjoyed Thanksgiving! We are thankful for this community and all the help and suggestions you’ve provided over the last year.

The big news this time around is the impending move of the TRAILS application (trail planning tool) to a more secure login procedure. Be sure to read the next article to learn more.

Many thanks to those of you who volunteered to test the Trail Data Portal in November. Once the website is fully operational, digital trail data providers will be able to submit trail datasets to be considered for inclusion into the USGS nationwide trails dataset and National Map products and services including US Topo. Datasets must be in the public domain and include at least 50 miles of trails to qualify.

The NDT team participated in the Resiliency Session at the Partnership for the National Trails System’s annual Trails Workshop in November. Many National Scenic and Historic Trails have been working to better understand the ecological stresses over the lands they pass through. The Florida Trail Association and the Florida Forest Service hosted a field trip to the Little Big Econ State Forest to hike a portion of the Florida National Scenic Trail which was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
