Protecting Glendora From Debris Flows

SAFRR scientist Sue Perry represented the USGS among some two dozen officials from local and federal agencies including city of Glendora, Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, US Forest Service, and National Weather Service. The group discussed public safety plans for the city of Glendora, where the recent Colby fire has increased debris flow hazard for the next 3-5 years. Using USGS debris flow hazard assessments as a foundation for planning, the city of Glendora spearheaded a plan that includes a four-color alert system, uniform messaging, public meetings, and extensive citizen outreach before during and after debris flow alerts.
