Sign up for TRAILS Decision Support Tool Virtual Workshop

November 24, 2020

Are you a trail planner? Does your organization update, maintain, create public domain trails?  Are you part of or do you partner with federal, state, or local land management agencies? Are you looking for an easy way to visualize trails and potential connections between trails?

Sign up for TRAILS Decision Support Tool Virtual Workshop!

When: 3rd Wednesday every month.

Target audience: As resources allow, the target audience includes anyone involved in the initial planning of new public domain trails or improvements to existing public domain trail routes or systems. Typically, participants work either directly for government land management agencies or partner with government land management agencies. Occupations may include: landscape architects, land management planners, trail designers/builders, wildland fire and other emergency services experts.

Workshop participants will be granted limited time access (90 days) to the TRAILS tool during which they may utilize the application and provide feedback. Requests for extended access will be considered based on individual use-cases and as resources allow.

Sign-Up: Space is limited, so email trails@usgs.gov to sign up (please provide your name, affiliation, contact information, and a short description on what you hope to learn from this workshop).

Description

The Department of Interior (DOI) has prioritized a vision to provide better access to public lands and improve connectivity on the nation’s public trail systems. The US Geological Survey and DOI are advancing that vision with the National Digital Trails Network (NDT) project.

The USGS has developed a web-based geospatial analysis tool to assist trail managers in identifying optimal routes between existing trails and trail systems. The TRAILS (Trail Routing Analysis and Information Linkage System) is a pre-planning tool that may help identify potential trail routes, enhance collaboration between land managers, and provide a visual tool for stakeholders.

Please join us for an overview of the project followed by a hands-on workshop focusing on using the TRAILS decision support tool.

Image Description:  TRAILS decision support tool showing an example of what a project scenario might look like. The left column is a ranked list of potential trail routes including trail names, terrain constraint level (High-Red, Medium-Yellow, and Low-Green), connector length, and proposed network length.

The center section shows a topographic base map highlighting protected lands, existing trails (shown in dashed black lines), and proposed connector routes. The connector routes are ranked by terrain constraint by their colors: red, yellow, and green. There is an inset in the center section showing the elevation profile of the connector route highlighted in yellow.

The far right column is the map legend and includes the AOI (shown as a red polygon), two Trail Project Services (Waypoints and Proposed Trails), Existing Trails, and Federal Management Agencies.
