Public Invitation: The State of Your State’s Vital Water Resources
Media and the public are invited to attend a free meeting about South Dakota water issues on Thursday, April 6, in Rapid City, South Dakota.
The 15th annual Western South Dakota Hydrology Meeting is an opportunity for reporters, scientists, students and community members to meet and exchange ideas, discuss issues and explore new science related to critical water resources in South Dakota. Three optional free field trips are also offered to conference attendees on Friday, April 7.
The invited luncheon keynote speaker for the John T. Loucks Distinguished Lecture is Marie Peppler with the U.S. Geological Survey, who will present on recent USGS flood studies and tools. Peppler is the USGS National Flood Inundation Mapping Coordinator in Reston, Virginia. The John T. Loucks Distinguished Lecture is sponsored by the West Dakota Water Development District.
Brad Rippey, a U.S. Department of Agriculture meteorologist, will provide the conference keynote about drought and flood monitoring.
WHAT: The theme for the 15th annual Western South Dakota Hydrology Meeting is “Feast and Famine: Floods and Droughts,” and consists of four technical sessions, a poster session with an evening social, a luncheon keynote speaker and an invited keynote presentation.

DETAILS: The conference is free for media, the public and students, with an optional $20 lunch. Professional registration fee is $100. Professionals may obtain professional development credit by attending technical sessions.

The following optional free field seminars/field trips will be offered on April 7 to conference attendees:
- Tour of Mid Continent Testing Labs, Rapid City, South Dakota
- Gilt Edge Mine Superfund Site, Lead, South Dakota (Note: registration for this field trip is full)
- Smarter Stormwater: Thinking Outside the Box (Culvert) for Urban Drainage Management
The annual conference typically draws more than 350 attendees. The preliminary 2017 program is available on the conference website.
The conference is organized by the USGS, National Weather Service, RESPEC, South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and West Dakota Water Development District.
