USGS HVO Press Release — Brief Surge of Activity at Kīlauea Volcano: Update
Aerial observations this morning show that no subdivision or road is threatened by the new lava flows.
Most activity is confined to the previous flow field and is of small magnitude. Small fires in kipukas were started along the west edge of the new flow but pose no threat. One ‘a‘ā flow issued from a vent just south of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō and moved downslope to the base of Pulama pali. Another surface flow advanced a short distance southwest from near Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō; still another flow moved a few hundred yards east of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō. Several small pāhoehoe breakouts occurred along the old tube system. The Waha‘ula and Kamokuna ocean entries remain active. Kona winds continue to cause bad vog conditions in East Hawai‘i.
Daily updates about ongoing eruptions, recent images and videos of summit and East Rift Zone volcanic activity, maps, and data about recent earthquakes in Hawaii are posted on the HVO website at https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo.
