USGS safeguards unpublished, sensitive, and proprietary information (refer to FSP Survey Manual (SM) policy SM 502.5). Authors must be aware of implications regarding privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property rights before they consider using such information in AI applications. Using AI tools in closed environments (e.g., internal USGS or Department of the Interior (DOI)) or hosting services on a non-USGS or DOI third-party infrastructure where privacy is guaranteed, may be warranted to ensure that information uploaded cannot be used for other purposes such as training of AI models.
