Well log digitization
Digitization of Windbigler #1 gamma ray log used to define lithology and correlate stratigraphy, obtained from https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2007/1142/ofr2007-1142.pdf (Public domain.)

Many legacy water, oil, and gas well logs, collected over the decades prior to the digital era, exist in paper format and include valuable information about the subsurface. Many state geological surveys are digitizing and making well logs publicly available on the Web. Many state geological surveys are legislatively mandated to archive and make available documents for wells drilled in the state. The documents include information about well location and drilling details, geologic unit thickness, chemical analyses and other material properties. Preservation and public dissemination of well information reduces data recollection and well drilling costs, and provides valuable data for a wide variety of exploration, development, and management activities related to natural resources engaged by private, industrial, and governmental organizations.
