Students at Art Center College of Design prototyped wildfire awareness campaigns after SAFRR exposed them to wildfire research and safety issues.
USGS wildfire researchers and their colleagues introduced an Art Center College of Design Designmatters studio class to southern California's wildfire basics, including these:
wildfires are a natural feature of life in southern California and cannot be stopped or avoided;
wildfire risk grows as more people live and play in the wild land urban interface (WUI), the area where neighborhoods meet wilderness;
there are many steps individuals and communities can take to reduce wildfire risk.
Armed with basic knowledge, the design, marketing, and multimedia students developed a collection prototype wildfire education campaigns, including "Are You a WUI?", a campaign to get residents to take ownership of their fire risk.
