Digital Shoreline Analysis System (version 6)

August 5, 2024

The Digital Shoreline Analysis System (version 6) is a stand-alone desktop application that complements a Geographic Information System (GIS). The DSAS software requires users to input a reference baseline and compilation of shoreline positions to generate measurement transects and shoreline intersections used to calculate rate-of-change statistics. DSAS provides an automated method for establishing measurement locations, performs rate calculations, and provides uncertainty values associated with rates of change.

DSAS version 6.0 was published to meet basic user requirements as the USGS transitions away from ArcMap starting February 2024. This preliminary release has some reduced functionality from DSAS v.5.1 to provide a minimum viable product under the imposed deadline. DSAS v.6.0 provides all necessary functionality to produce rates of change and associated uncertainties from a pre-existing baseline and shoreline positions. Additional development phases over the next two to three years will return expected functionality (e.g., shoreline forecasting and data visualization), and enhanced features for users.
