His research interests include the development and application of solute-transport models to groundwater problems and the assessment of groundwater depletion.  He is an AGU Fellow and has received the O.E. Meinzer Award from the Geological Society of America. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2015.

Lenny Konikow received a B.A. in geology from Hofstra University (1966), and a M.S. (1969) and Ph.D. (1973) from Penn State University.  He started with the USGS as a summer student in 1971, working with John Bredehoeft in Colorado.  He worked for the USGS from 1971 through 2013, initially in the Colorado District Office and then transferring to the National Research Program in Denver after about 3 years.  In 1978 he moved to Reston, to work in the Office of Ground Water for 3 years, and then re-joined NRP.  His research interests include the development and application of solute-transport models to groundwater contamination problems, coastal submarine groundwater discharge processes, and groundwater depletion and its contribution to sea-level rise. He retired in November 2013 and has continued active research as an Emeritus Scientist since then.

He is an AGU Fellow and has received the O.E. Meinzer Award from the Hydrogeology Division of the Geological Society of America.  He also served as the Vice-President for North America of the International Association of Hydrogeologists during 2008-2012. He was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2015.
