Mary Maxey
Mary is a Data Manager and Records Manager at the USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center at the Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel, MD.
Mary has been an integral part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at Patuxent Research Refuge since 1991. Over the course of her career, she has supported a wide range of scientific efforts, including work on environmental contaminants, endangered species, and migratory bird research. Currently serving as the Data Manager and Records Manager for the Eastern Ecological Science Center (EESC), Mary provides proactive and consistent support in data management, records coordination, and publication processing.
As the Center’s IPDS (Information Product Data System) Coordinator, Mary oversees the routing and approval process for all scientific products and publications. She ensures accurate documentation and compliance throughout the year and acts as a key resource for authors, supervisors, managers, and the Bureau Approving Official on IPDS-related matters. She plays a critical role in maintaining the Center’s product portfolio in IPDS, resolving stalled records, and guiding staff through the publication process.
Mary also maintains and updates BASIS+ project records, manages the EndNote publication database, and disseminates journal articles by updating IPDS records, submission forms, and the EESC bibliography. She writes and posts corresponding Center News articles and fulfills journal article requests from the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC).
In her records management role, Mary supports the Center’s compliance with federal recordkeeping standards. She maintains and updates the study plan record inventory, ensures accuracy of file codes and schedules, and provides key support during exit interviews. She reviews Data Management Plans (DMPs) during the study plan approval process, attends records liaison meetings, and shares best practices with the Data Management Team.
Mary also maintains the Center’s staff profiles and photo archive, ensuring information is up-to-date and publicly accessible via the USGS website. Her dedication, attention to detail, and collaborative spirit make her an essential part of the Center’s operational and scientific infrastructure.
