Student Services Contractors

Are you a student or recent graduate interested in science and hands-on research experience? The U.S. Geological Survey is offering opportunities to participate in science research projects in the field, lab, or office at various USGS Science Centers across the country.

What do Student Services Contractors (SSCs) do?

Student Services Contractors participate in scientific research projects at USGS Science Centers across the US. SSCs work directly with USGS scientists who provide oversight, direction, and engagement. Projects are aligned with the student’s field of study.

As an SSC, you can:

  • Gain hands-on experience in real-world science projects
  • Build technical and professional skills
  • Explore potential science careers and pathways
  • Receive mentorship from experienced scientists

Who is eligible?

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old, and
  • Be eligible to work in the United States (U.S. Citizen or appropriate work visa), and
  • Be currently enrolled in a degree program at a recognized educational institution, or a recent graduate (within two years of graduation).

Some student services contracts announcements may list additional eligibility requirements.

Where can I work?

Contract availability is determined by the needs of the respective offices of the U.S. Geological Survey. This may include positions in any of our larger Science Centers (e.g., Reston, VA; Menlo Park, CA; Denver, CO), and Science Centers and field stations across the country.

These positions are designed for students to work in USGS offices with their mentors and other USGS contractors and employees. Positions may be full- or part-time, depending on the specific project and requirements of the hiring Science Center.

What are the benefits?

Student Services Contracts offer the flexibility (full/part-time) students require, while providing competitive pay based on training/experience, travel expenses, training, workers' compensation and equipment/supplies as needed. Note that since student contractors are not considered federal employees, they do not receive federal benefits. If you have a particular question, contact the hiring manager for the specific contract. Additional benefits, depending on the position, may include:

  • Scientific mentors and teams providing technical advice
  • Specialized research related to your field of work/study
  • Explore and gain greater access to scientific careers in various fields
  • Competitive salary based on training and experience
  • Contacts with fellow scientists in various technical fields
  • Join mentoring, science, and career-development seminars

How much would I get paid?

SSCs are paid an hourly wage based on a combination of academic background, prior experience, and the location of the position.

What is the length of employment under a typical contract?

The length of employment will vary depending on the needs of each project. The start date can be flexible and is dependent upon the needs of each project. Occasionally, student services contracts can be extended for up to 3 years. Positions may be part-time or full-time.
