This workshop will bring leaders of anti-harassment efforts together to share ideas and discuss best practice methods to reduce harassment in the science workplace.

A cactus with a blossom on it.
Early June is a great time to view wildflowers in the desert. Although they may have had a vicious appearance, these cacti had absolutely lovely blossoms.

Intended Audience:

The science professional community, including field-work intensive sectors.  This includes government and academia.

Logistics:

A 3-day workshop at the BLM National Training Center in Phoenix, titled:

“Preventing Harassment in Science: Building a Community of Practice Toward Meaningful Change”.

Objectives:

  1. Summary of existing data and literature on harassment in sciences.

  2. Review of anti-harassment programs, training methods, codes of conduct, and reporting mechanisms in science-based academic and government institutions.

  3. Convene active agents of change and leaders in harassment prevention to exchange ideas and best practices in several focus areas organized around harassment prevention in federal-sector scientific workplaces, academia, and field-work-intensive settings.

  4. Utilize data synthesis and input from the workshop participants to produce a white paper summarizing current best practices for publication as a peer-reviewed journal article.

  5. Establish or recommend specific common data collection methods among participants for interoperability and comparability of metrics that measure impact of best practices.

  6. Create a community of practice to continue to engage in anti-harassment efforts.

  7. Plan for future workshops to revisit best practices and report-out on ongoing data collection/results.
