Distribution, 14C chronology, and paleomagnetism of latest Pleistocene and Holocene lava flows at Haleakala volcano, Island of Maui, Hawai'i: A revision of lava flow hazard zones
New mapping and 60 new radiocarbon ages define the age and distribution of latest Pleistocene and Holocene (past 13,000 years) lava flows at Haleakalā volcano, Island of Maui. Paleomagnetic directions were determined for 118 sites, of which 89 are in lava flows younger than 13,000 years. The paleomagnetic data, in conjunction with a reference paleosecular variation (PSV) curve for the Hawaiian Isl

New insights into Arctic paleogeography and tectonics from U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology
To test existing models for the formation of the Amerasian Basin, detrital zircon suites from 12 samples of Triassic sandstone from the circum-Arctic region were dated by laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The northern Verkhoyansk (NE Russia) has Permo-Carboniferous (265-320 Ma) and Cambro-Silurian (410-505 Ma) zircon populations derived via river systems from th

Modeling spatial and temporal variations in temperature and salinity during stratification and overturn in Dexter Pit Lake, Tuscarora, Nevada, USA
This paper examines the seasonal cycling of temperature and salinity in Dexter pit lake in arid northern Nevada, and describes an approach for modeling the physical processes that operate in such systems. The pit lake contains about 596,200 m3 of dilute, near neutral (pHs 6.7–9) water. Profiles of temperature, conductivity, and selected element concentrations were measured almost monthly during 19

The utility of gravity and magnetic methods for understanding subsurface hydrogeology in large alluvial watersheds: Examples from urbanized basins of the Western United States
Population continues to grow rapidly within the large alluvial watersheds associated with structural basins of the Basin and Range Province and the Rio Grande rift of the western United States. Increasing demands on ground‐water resources in these basins, combined with water‐rights disputes, have amplified the need for improved understanding of subsurface hydrogeology. Gravity and magnetic methods

Birth of the lower Colorado River–Stratigraphic and geomorphic evidence for its inception near the conjunction of Nevada, Arizona, and California
A detailed record of the late Cenozoic history of the lower Colorado River can be inferred from alluvial and (likely) lacustrine stratigraphy exposed in dissected alluvial basins below the mouth of the Grand Canyon. Numerous sites in Mohave, Cottonwood, and Detrital valleys contain stratigraphic records that directly bear on the mode, timing, and consequences of the river’s inception and integrati

Net dextral slip, Neogene San Gregorio–Hosgri fault zone, coastal California: Geologic evidence and tectonic implications
Reinterpretation of onshore and offshore geologic mapping, examination of a key offshore well core, and revision of cross-fault ties indicate Neogene dextral strike slip of 156 ± 4 km along the San Gregorio–Hosgri fault zone, a major strand of the San Andreas transform system in coastal California. Delineating the full course of the fault, defining net slip across it, and showing its relationship

Hydrothermal vent fluids, siliceous hydrothermal deposits, and hydrothermally altered sediments in Yellowstone Lake
Stable isotopic (dD and d18O) data indicate about 13% total evaporative concentration has occurred in Yellowstone Lake, yet lake waters are enriched in dissolved As, B, Cl, Cs, Ge, Li, Mo, Sb, and W by at least an order-of-magnitude relative to the flow-weighted composition of inflowing streams. We conclude that lake water is a mixture of inflowing surface water and hydrothermal source fluid that

Geology of the proposed Yucca Mountain repository site, Nevada
Yucca Mountain, located about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, has been recommended by the President for a mined geologic repository for high-level radioactive waste. This field trip will examine the geologic and hydrologic setting for Yucca Mountain, as well as specific results of the site characterization program. The field trip will visit the locations for underground in situ testing i
