Contaminants in Complex Hydrogeologic Settings - NAWC 2018 Archive

USGS scientists described the scientific understanding, practical technology, and latest research related to characterization, monitoring, and remediation of contaminated groundwater at a USGS / EPA Fractured Rock Workshop. The two-day workshop was hosted by EPA Region 3 (Philadelphia) on May 24-25, 2017. Project scientists covered topics including:

USGS scientists updated research progress through presentations at the Fourth International Symposium on Bioremediation and Sustainable Environmental Technologies, May 22-25, 2017, in Miami.

USGS scientists updated research progress through several presentations at the 2015 Geological Society of America (GSA) Annual Meeting, November 1-4, in Baltimore. Project scientists Claire Tiedeman and Michelle Lorah, along with Rutgers Prof. Lee Slater, co-chaired the Contaminant Transport, Fate, and Remediation in Fractured Rocks topical session.

USGS scientists updated research progress through several presentations at the National Groundwater Association (NGWA) Conference on Groundwater in Fractured Rock, September 28-29, 2015 in Burlington, Vermont. Project scientist Paul Hsieh presented the conference keynote address: "Flow and Transport in Fractured Rocks — Retrospective and Look Ahead."

Project scientist Dan Goode and others presented research results on fine-scale delineation of contaminants by rock-core sampling at the 49th Annual Meeting of the Northeastern Section, Geological Society of America on March 23, 2014, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Results of a 5-year bioaugmentation remediation experiment and other research were presented at the NGWA Conference on Groundwater in Fractured Rock and Sediments, September 23-24, 2013, in Burlington, Vermont

USGS scientists updated research progress through 8 presentations at the National Groundwater Association (NGWA) Focus Conference on Fractured Rock and Eastern Groundwater Regional Issues, September 26-27, 2011 in Burlington, Vermont. Project scientist Carole Johnson, USGS Office of Groundwater, Branch of Geophysics (OGW BG), was the keynote speaker for the conference.

Allen Shapiro co-convened the session “Strategies for Groundwater Remediation in Fractured Bedrock and Low-Permeability Formations” at the 7th International Conference on Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds, May 24-27, 2010 in Monterey, California.

USGS hosted scientists from EPA HQ, Regions 1-4 and from State environmental agencies from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland on 25 September 2008 for a one-day workshop at the USGS NJ Water Science Center. More information is available here.

The project hosted a "Workshop on Fate, Transport, and Remediation of Chlorinated Solvents in Fractured Sedimentary Rocks at the Former Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey" on Wednesday, 26 September 2007, at the 2007 NGWA/U.S. EPA, Fractured Rock Conference -- State of the Science and Measuring Success in Remediation, in Portland, Maine. 

Allen Shapiro presented a poster on "Distribution, Transport, and Biodegradation of TCE, DCE, and Vinyl Chloride in Fractured Sedimentary Rocks at the Naval Air Warfare Center, West Trenton, New Jersey" at the SERDP/ESTCP Partners in Environmental Technology Technical Symposium & Workshop, Washington, D.C., November 28-30, 2006.

The project hosted a Field Trip "Geologic, Hydrogeologic, and Biogeochemical Controls on Natural and Enhanced Degradation of Industrial Solvents in Fractured Rocks" on Thursday, 26 October 2006, at the 2006 National Meeting of the Geological Society of America, in Philadelphia. 

Allen Shapiro and Frank Chapelle convened a session on Physical, Chemical, and Biological Controls on Remediation of Chlorinated Solvents in Fractured Rock, at the 2006 Meeting of the Geological Society of America. 

Preliminary results of rock core sampling for TCE and other VOC's were presented at the National Ground Water Association's Conference on Eastern Regional Ground Water Issues, 18-19 September 2006, in Portland, Maine.
