Participatory Engagement for Storm Management at the Caribbean Conservation Community of Practice
SPCMSC Research Oceanographer Legna M. Torres-García and Cherokee Nation System Solutions contractor Krystalliá Valdés-Calderón attended the Caribbean Conservation Community of Practice meeting hosted by the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center to present a poster describing preliminary results of two workshops on participatory engagement for storm management held in Puerto Rico.
Legna Torres-García (USGS SPCMSC) and Krystalliá Valdés-Calderón (CNSS) attended the Caribbean Conservation Community of Practice meeting from 3/25/25-3/27/25 at University of the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas, to present preliminary results from two workshops on participatory engagement for storm management held in Puerto Rico on August 20 and 22, 2024. They presented a poster which describes the design and preliminary results of the workshops that collected information about emergency decision makers’ workflows and data needs during hurricanes.
Legna and Krystalliá also collected additional feedback, asking emergency decision makers in attendance from around the Caribbean about their decision-making processes and data needs. The goals of these efforts are to identify data gaps for information needed to make emergency decisions during hurricanes in the Caribbean; and to guide next steps for USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Research Program researchers for conducting science, for science product development, and for science product testing to fill these gaps.
