Register New Lampricide Active Ingredients and End-use Formulations and Maintain Registered Products in Compliance with United States and Canadian Pesticide Regulations
The USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center (UMESC) provides regulatory affairs assistance to the Great Lakes Fishery Commission (GLFC), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), state and private partners in matters regarding numerous registrations of the lampricides TFM and niclosamide in the U.S. and Canada. The result of this technical assistance is critical to maintaining the registrations of the lampricides that are used to control the aquatic invasive species, especially the lamprey in the Great Lakes. If lamprey populations are left uncontrolled, the effects lamprey would have on the fishery industry in the Great Lakes would be devastating.
Regulatory assistance includes, but is not limited to;
- ensuring that that annual maintenance fees and other regulatory submissions and fees are submitted to maintain lampricide registrations with the U.S. Environmental protection Agency (EPA) and Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agencies (PMRA);
- reviewing and submitting 6(a)(2) adverse effects reports received from FWS to meet compliance with EPA, and this could expand as the PMRA has drafted similar requirements;
- monitoring regulatory releases and their effect on lampricide registrations and applications;
- working with the FWS and DFO to improve product labeling with the EPA and PMRA;
- assisting federal, state, and private partners with regulatory requirements of the EPA and PMRA for pesticide producing establishments;
- working with partners and the PMRA to successfully complete the re-evaluation process for TFM registrations in Canada;
- assisting partners with state and federal requirements for experimental permits to support research on sea lamprey pheromone as a possible tool for control of sea lamprey;
- answering frequent and numerous requests for information and assistance from partners regarding regulatory compliance with a variety of federal and state and agencies;
- responding to requests for information from federal and state regulatory agencies;
- assisting private partners with certain special local needs registrations.
Objective
Provide the GLFC, DFO, FWS, and other state partners with legally registered lampricide products for use in the GLFC Integrated Sea Lamprey Control Program, and assist with certain special local needs lampricide registrations pending for control of snails devastating catfish ponds in Mississippi and Arkansas.
