Processes of wetland loss in India
Wetlands in India supply crucial human and animal needs such as drinking water, protein production, fodder, water purification, wildlife habitat, and flood storage. Increased appreciation of uses and threats is essential to protect wetlands where justified. Three quarters of India's population is rural, it places great demands on India's wetlands and losses continue to occur. This paper is based o

A 7 year record of above-ground net primary production in a southeastern Mexican mangrove forest
Spatial and temporal variations in net above-ground primary production (NPP) and litter turnover rate were studied, from 1987 to 1993, in a mangrove forest bordering Laguna de Terminos, Mexico. NPP, the sum of total litter fall and wood production, was measured over the entire study period in three zones in a basin forest: zone I, where Rhizophora mangle (red mangrove) occurs but Avicennia germina

Direct denitrification in mangrove sediments in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico
Rates of direct denitrification were measured using 15N isotope tchniques in intact sediment cores from fringe and basin mangroves in Terminos Lagoon, Mexico. Sediments were injected with 15NO3- and the distribution of 15N was measured over time in the head space, overlying water, and sediments. Experiments included an investigation of spatial variation in denitrification rates by comparing result

The influence of Hurricane Andrew on sediment distribution in Louisiana coastal marshes
The areal extent and temporal patterns of sediment deposition in delta marshes and shallow water bodies of Louisiana associated with the passage of Hurricane Andrew were determined from sediment traps, marker horizons, and benchmarks deployed for other studies. Data were collected over different time scales from 11 sites representing salt, brackish, and intermediate marshes, shallow water substrat

Modeling mangrove canopy reflectance using a light interaction model and an optimization technique
At 20 sites, incorporating mixtures of black, red, and white mangroves, canopy reflectance spectra were derived from high resolution spectral data taken from a helicopter platform. Canopy characteristics were predicted from the canopy reflectance spectra by using measured and estimated data as inputs into a light-canopy interaction model within a optimization routine. Pertinent to average conditio

Disturbance and recovery of the Louisiana coastal marsh landscape from the impacts of Hurricane Andrew
The impact of Hurricane Andrew on the Louisiana coastal landscape and the initial recovery of wetland plant communities was determined from extensive surveys of a large geographic region of coastal marsh near Atchafalaya Bay and intensive studies of an oligohaline marsh on Otter Bayou. Wind and water movements associated with the hurricane resulted in the formation of compressed marsh, thick sedim

Microwave radiometers and their application in field and aircraft campaigns for remote sensing of land and water surfaces
The paper presents an overview of the scientific investigations and practical applications of a group of specialists working in the Institute of Radioengineering and Electronics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IRE RAS) with their partners in Russia and the USA in the area of passive microwave remote sensing as applied to the study of soil, vegetation and water bodies. Applications that are des
