Civil Treatment for Leaders

Civil Treatment for Leaders

New Mandatory Class for All Supervisors and Managers

The Department has required that supervisors and managers from all DOI bureaus attend the four-hour class, Civil Treatment for Leaders. A cadre of USGS trainers have been identified and will be certified to provide this class starting in February. To ensure 100% participation for the target audience, this course will be provided by our USGS trainers at multiple USGS office locations. The class is highly interactive and there is no tuition for participants. Registration and completion reports will be done through DOI Talent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why is this training for supervisors/managers only?

A:
The EEOC Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace reported that all Federal employees need compliance training. The report also states "... managers and supervisors need additional training if the employer wants to address conduct before it rises to the level of illegal harassment, ensuring compliance with employment non-discrimination laws…" The Department selected workplace civility training as being the most effective in preventing harassment in the workplace, along with bystander intervention training which will be addressed by the newly revised No FEAR Act online class.

Q: Can I substitute any other class for this requirement?

A:
The Department has selected this specific class as the only way to meet this requirement.

Q: How will supervisors be able to attend the training if trainers are only being sent to USGS offices with a minimum number of supervisors?

A:
Invitations to supervisors from smaller USGS offices will be sent to those within driving distance from a larger USGS office to attend the CTL training.

Q: Does this class meet the annual EEO training requirement for managers and supervisors?

A:
The annual EEO training requirement by the Department is no longer in effect. Individual bureaus will develop competency based EEO training plans based on specific challenges and needs.

Q: I am a USGS Center Manager. How do I arrange a CTL training class for my Center?

A:
Contact the USGS CTL coordinator, Nancy Gregory, ngregory@usgs.gov, 303-445-4668.

Q: I currently have assigned supervisory duties but am not coded as such in FPPS. May I register for this training?

A:
If approved by your supervisor contact the USGS CTL coordinator listed above to arrange for payment of the instructional packet ($78 ea).
