Comment on “Macrodispersion in sand-shale sequences” by A. J. Desbarats

Desbarats [1990] used a particle-tracking scheme to investigate the physics of three-dimensional solute transport in aquifers composed of two porous media of different hydraulic conductivities. The spatially heterogeneous fluid velocity was assumed to be the only mechanism of solute movement; local or pore scale dispersion and molecular diffusion were assumed to be negligible. The particle-trackin

Solution of the one-dimensional consolidation theory equation with a pseudospectral method

The one-dimensional consolidation theory equation is solved for an aquifer system using a pseudospectral method. The spatial derivatives are computed using Fast Fourier Transforms and the time derivative is solved using a fourth-order Runge-Kutta scheme. The computer model calculates compaction based on the void ratio changes accumulated during the simulated periods of time. Compactions and expans

Documentation of a data base on lake and reservoir water quality in the United States

The report describes the procedures used to select, retrieve, compile, and screen a lake and reservoir data base from the STORET (STOrage and RETrieval) system of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Procedures used to select, compile, and screen the size of the data base also are discussed. The retrieved data comprise 116 water-quality and biological constituents and physical and morphometri

Physical, chemical, and biological data for detailed study of irrigation drainage in the Middle Green River basin, Utah 1988-89, with selected data for 1982-87

Physical, chemical, and biological data were collected in the middle Green River basin, eastern Utah, between 1988 and 1989, as part of a detailed study of the effects of irrigation drainage on wetland areas. Data-collection efforts were concentrated in the Stewart Lake Waterfowl Management Area near Jensen, and Ouray National Wildlife Refuge near Ouray. Data also were collected from Ashley Creek

Sediments, nutrients, and oxygen-demanding substances in the Minnesota River: Selected water-quality data, 1989-90

This report presents selected physical and chemical data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey for the Minnesota River Assessment Project, a four-year interagency study coordinated by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. Water samples were collected at 12 sites on the Minnesota River and at the mouths of 10 major tributary streams located from the outlet of Lac qui Parle Reservoir to Henderso

Water-quality data for Sauk Lake and tributaries near Sauk Centre, Minnesota, 1988-89

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to reduce aquatic growth and siltation in Sauk Lake in west-central Minnesota in order to improve recreation. A detailed water-quality survey of the lake and surrounding watershed was needed to plan remedial activities. Water-quality data were collected at 11 sites on Sauk Lake, at sites on 3 major tributaries to the lake, and at the outflow from the la

Water-resources investigations in Pennsylvania; programs and activities of the U.S. Geological Survey, 1990-91

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was established by an act of Congress on March 3, 1879, to provide a permanent Federal agency to conduct the systematic and scientific 'classification of the public lands, and examination of the geological structure, mineral resources, and products of national domain'. Since 1879, the research and fact-finding role of the USGS has grown and has been modified to me
