Software

The USGS Water Resources Mission Area provides water information that is fundamental to national and local economic well-being, protection of life and property, and effective management of the Nation’s water resources. Below, find software for a wide range of water resources research and management questions.

An Open Source Spreadsheet for Calculation of Equivalent Freshwater Altitude in Brackish Water Mixing Zone of an Aquifer with Documentation on Appropriate Use

This software release documents an open source spreadsheet that was developed by the USGS in 2007 and modified herein for general use for calculation of equivalent freshwater altitude at wells where the water quality data indicate the well is tapping brackish areas of an aquifer system. One example of this includes coastal wells in the diffusion/mixing or transition zone of the aquifer near the fr

Point-Source Load Estimation Tool (PSLoadEsT)

Software for generating reproducible load calculations for point source dischargers.  Includes features to manage common data challenges such as duplicates, incompatible input tables, and missing nutrient concentration or effluent flow data.

MODFLOW-2005: USGS Three-Dimensional Finite-Difference Ground-Water Model

MODFLOW 6 is presently the core MODFLOW version distributed by the USGS, but MODFLOW-2005 (the previous core version) is still actively maintained and supported. MODFLOW-2005 simulates steady and nonsteady flow in an irregularly shaped flow system in which aquifer layers can be confined, unconfined, or a combination of confined and unconfined.

SPARROW Modeling Program

SPARROW is a popular watershed modeling technique, distributed by the USGS, that estimates the amount of a contaminant transported from inland watersheds to larger water bodies by linking monitoring data with information on watershed characteristics and contaminant sources.

iRIC river flow and riverbed variation analysis

iRIC (International River Interface Cooperative) is a river flow and riverbed variation analysis software package which combines the functionality of MD_SWMS (Multi-Dimensional Surface-Water Modeling System), developed by the USGS, and RIC-Nays, developed by the Foundation of Hokkaido River Disaster Prevention Research Center.

SWToolbox Software Information

USGS and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have combined their SWSTAT and DFLOW software programs into a new tool for the low-flow anlaysis, the SWToolbox. As of May 2022, the SWToolbox has been superseded by the Hydrologic Toolbox.

National Streamflow Statistics (NSS) Application - Formerly NSS Program

The USGS develops regression equations for estimating streamflow statistics for every state, Puerto Rico, and a number of metropolitan areas in the U.S. These equations have been compiled into the National Streamflow Statistics (NSS) Application for design, planning, management, and regulatory purposes. These estimates are often needed at ungaged sites where no observed flow data are available.

The Groundwater Toolbox: A Graphical and Mapping Interface for Analysis of Hydrologic Data

The Groundwater Toolbox is a graphical and mapping interface for analysis of hydrologic data. It provides methods to estimate many of the components of the water budget for a hydrologic basin, including precipitation, streamflow, base flow, runoff, groundwater recharge and evapotranspiration. As of May 2022, the Groundwater Toolbox has been superseded by the Hydrologic Toolbox.

MODFLOW-GUI Version 4

MODFLOW-GUI is a preprocessor and postprocessor graphical-user interface for preparing MODFLOW-96, MODFLOW-2000, MODFLOW-2005, MOC3D, MODPATH, and ZONEBDGT input data and viewing model output for use within Argus Open Numerical Environments (Argus ONE).

Point-Source Load Estimation Tool (PSLoadEsT)

The Point-Source Load Estimation Tool (PSLoadEsT) provides a user-friendly interface for generating reproducible load calculations for point source dischargers while managing common data challenges including duplicates, incompatible input tables, and incomplete or missing nutrient concentration or effluent flow data. Maintaining a consistent method across an entire study area is important when est

The Surrogate Analysis and Index Developer (SAID) Tool

The Surrogate Analysis and Index Developer (SAID) tool is a stand-alone tool to assist in the creation of ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models by providing visual and quantitative diagnostics to the user.

MF2KtoMF05UC

MF2KtoMF05UC is a program to convert MODFLOW-2000 files to MODFLOW-2005 and UCODE_2005 files.
