Data Releases

The data collected and the techniques used by USGS scientists should conform to or reference national and international standards and protocols if they exist and when they are relevant and appropriate. For datasets of a given type, and if national or international metadata standards exist, the data are indexed with metadata that facilitates access and integration.

Estimated crop irrigation water use withdrawals in Willcox Groundwater Basin, Arizona for 2022

Observations of irrigated agricultural land within the Willcox Groundwater Basin in Arizona. Digitized field boundaries were used to locate crops for in situ verification twice in 2022; crop verification occurred first on May 17th and again on August 26th. Field boundaries were digitized from U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Agricultural Imagery Program County Mosaic 2021 imagery for Arizo

Paleocene-Eocene foraminifer census data from South Dover Bridge and Mattawoman Creek-Billingsley Road coreholes

We include planktic and benthic foraminifer census data tables from the Paleocene-Eocene sections of South Dover Bridge and Mattawoman Creek-Billingsley Road coreholes.

Mapping karst groundwater flow paths and delineating recharge areas for Fern Cave, Alabama through the use of dye tracing

Fern Cave in Jackson County, Alabama is the longest and deepest cave in Alabama with over 15 miles of cave passages and 536 feet of depth. The cave is cooperatively managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Southeastern Cave Conservancy. At least three different streams flow through the cave including the Surprise, Lower North, and Bottom Cave streams. Two of these streams, Lower North

Dye tracing data related to karst hydrologic processes in carbonate fensters of the western Great Smoky Mountains

Dye tracing investigations were conducted in Cades Cove and Tuckaleechee Cove, two carbonate fensters in the western Great Smoky Mountains. These investigations were conducted as part of a two-year study examining the karst hydrology in the carbonate fensters. Main objectives of the dye tracing investigations were to determine resurgences for cave systems, delineate recharge areas for major spring

Developing a Stochastic Hydrological Model for Informing Lake Water Level Drawdown Management

This data release consists of four datasets which were used for evaluating winter drawdown (WD) lakes to follow the Massachusetts general WD guidelines. The first dataset ("Water level observations.csv") provides water level monitoring data of 21 (18 WD and 3 non-WD) recreational lakes in Massachusetts from 2014 to 2018. The water levels were measured by paired nonvented pressure transducers (HOBO

Comparison of environmental flow recommendations for the Willamette Basin Sustainable Rivers Program, water years 2008-2022

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Nature Conservancy developed the Sustainable Rivers Program (SRP) as a collaborative environmental flows program to identify, refine, and implement environmental strategies at select USACE dams. The SRP was introduced to the Willamette Basin, Oregon, in 2007 through a series of environmental flow workshops, which led to stakeholder generated environ

Satellite tracking of sea turtles using Biscayne National Park, 2009-2021

This dataset includes details of loggerhead and green turtles captured and satellite tagged between 2009 and 2021; the turtles presented here have tracking days within Biscayne National Park. A subset of turtles was captured within Biscayne National Park, whereas others were tracked to the study site, and tagged elsewhere. The dataset contains information related to satellite tracking (e.g., track

Chemistry and Flow Data from Headwater Streams Draining Hydrothermally Altered Areas in Colorado

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release contains stream water chemistry and streamflow data collected in late August and early September, 2021 from 28 sites located throughout Colorado, USA. The sampled streams all drain high-elevation mountain watersheds in areas where the bedrock is hydrothermally altered and contains abundant sulfide minerals. Most sampled streams are therefore affected

Environmental chemistry from selected sites in Lakeport, Lake County, California (version 1.1, August 2023)

This data release documents chemical analyses of environmental samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Lakeport (Lake County, California) during July 11-12, 2022. Environmental samples were collected at selected sites to assess the effects of lead-based paint on soil chemistry. This sampling was made as part of a broader study to attribute sources of lead in soils in cooperation

Grizzly Bear Space Use in the US Northern Rocky Mountains (ver. 3.0, July 2024)

Over the past two centuries, persecution and habitat loss caused grizzly bears (Ursus arctos) to decline from a population of approximately 50,000 individuals to only 4 fragmented populations within the continental United States. In recent decades, these populations have increased and expanded in size and range due to collaborative conservation efforts and protections under the Endangered Species

Assessment of Giant Sequoia Mortality and Regeneration within Burned Groves in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks (ver. 2.0, January 2024)

Provided are data containing condition assessments on individual giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum; SEGI) stems and post-fire regeneration counts within Board Camp, Suwanee, New Oriole Lake, and a subset of Redwood Mountain groves of Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks, respectively. Stem data contain condition-related attributes (e.g., spatial location, diameter breast height, status -

Data relating to the development of a quantitative PCR assay for detecting Northwest salamander (Ambystoma gracile) in environmental DNA samples

The data support a study that describes the development and validation of a primer and probe based quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay for use with environmental DNA to detect Northwest salamander (Ambystoma gracile), a species endemic to the temperate Pacific coastal region of North America. The metadata includes qPCR quantification cycle (Cq) values from testing the A. gracile assay on DNA extracted f
