Waterfowl and their wintering grounds in Mexico, 1937-64
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has been interested in migratory birds, especially waterfowl, in Mexico for many years, An early period of cooperation in waterfowl administration was culminated in 1937 with the final ratification of the Convention Between the United States and the United Mexican States for the Protection of Migratory Birds and Game Mammals, usually referred to as the Migratory

Seismic-reflection and sidescan-sonar data collected off eastern Cape Cod, Massachusetts, during April 1979
The U.S. Geological Survey collected 98 line kilometers of single-channel seismic-reflection profiles and sidescan sonar records on the inner shelf of eastern Cape Cod, Massachusetts, during April 1979. The data were obtained during cruise NE-1-79 of the R/V NEECHO. The purposes of the survey were: (1) to study the development of barrier islands; (2) to document the frequency and rate of migration

Eustrongylides and pesticide levels in a great blue heron shot in Wisconsin
The parasitic roundworm, Eustrongylides ignotus Jagersk, has been known to cause mortality and morbidity in members of the heron family in the eastern states of North America. To date no previous records exist for this nematode in Wisconsin. Even though eustrongylidiosis was first detected in the District of Columbia in 1926 by Chapin (1926), it was not until 1976 that this parasite was found in t

Effects of abundant species on the ability of observers to make accurate counts of birds
Bird numbers can be estimated using a variety of methods (Emlen 1971, Berthold 1976, Reynolds et al. 1980). The number of birds counted is frequently reported in relation to some measure of effort: e.g. per unit area, per count period, per observer day, or per km of trail. The numbers recorded are sometimes those of only a single species (Kepler and Kepler 1973, Mayfield 1973, Van Riper et al. 197

Effects of crude oil and swimming behavior and survival in the rice rat
Oil slicks in laboratory test chambers inhibited swimming behavior of rice rats, and reduced survival at low temperature. Predisposition to enter the water and swim was greatly reduced at both high (200 ml/m2 water surface) and low (20 ml/m2) concentrations of oil. Survival was significantly affected only at high concentrations. The results may be of value in predicting the impact of oil spills on

Breeding habit of the toad Bufo coccifer in Costa Rica, with a description of the tadpole
The breeding habits of Bufo coccifer were studied in northwestern Costa Rica between 1971 and 1974. This species breeds during the rainy season, at least from May through August. Males chorus from areas of shallow water. Their calls resemble those of Mexican representatives of the species in pulse rate and duration, but are closer to those of other Costa Rican and Panamanian populations in dominan
