Chain-of-custody

Chain of custody (COC) ensures the identity and integrity of a given sample from the time it arrives at the National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL) through analysis and disposal. It is a process utilized when requested by a customer to process a sample for possible legal action.

High-efficiency-particle-arresting (HEPA)

High-efficiency-particle-arresting (HEPA) is a type of specialized air filtration.  According to published standards established and maintained by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a HEPA air filter must remove (from the air that is filtered) a minimum of 99.7% of the air-borne particles that have a size greater-than-or-equal-to 0.3 mm.  Air filters meeting the ASME “HEPA-standard” have many applications, including use in sensitive industrial production areas and laboratory clean rooms.  At the NWQL, HEPA filters are used to purify air that is circulated through to the clean-room laboratory.

A cleanroom (or clean room) is a specialized facility utilized to conduct sensitive industrial production or scientific work.  Cleanrooms are designed to maintain extremely low levels of particulates (dust, lint, etc.). Currently, the clean room at the NWQL is being used as a standards preparation laboratory.  The ultra-clean air helps reduce the possibility of contamination of stock solutions being prepared in the laboratory. This is especially important when dealing with common industrial and waste compounds that are ubiquitous.
