The Pacific Islands and Alaska CASCs continue their collaborative efforts to support Indigenous-led climate adaptation research and planning in Hawaiʻi and Alaska.

Alaska CASC researchers were invited to join the Pacific Islands CASC at the 2024 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference to co-lead a session on “Building Pilina across the Ocean: Supporting Indigenous-led Climate Adaptation Research and Planning in Hawaiʻi and Alaska”.

Hawaiʻi and Alaska-based facilitators and other local organizations co-led discussions on topics such as Indigenous digital knowledge systems and data sovereignty, community-based data collection in data-poor regions and Indigenous methodologies for climate adaptation research and planning. The Alaska CASC also came together with Pacific Islands CASC members for a community work day at Papahana Kuaola in Heʻeia, Oʻahu to learn about the history and cultural practices of the area.

Learn more about how the two regions share surprising similarities between their watershed and coastal ecosystems, robust indigenous communities, and more through the AK-PI CASC Collaboration.
